"Shipping owner and president of Olympiakos Vangelis Marinakis had a close relationship with the Media world a long time before his recent request for a new TV license via his company, 'Alter Ego'.
His involvement in football made him to finance the 'Parapolitika' Media company, in order to fight against his opponents. This company, with political and economical newspapers, radio station, websites and even a newspaper about the Greek Orthodox Church, hundreds of workers and for those who know well the plans of Mr. Marinakis about the TV stations, the barracks for the creation of a new channel, if he finally manages to get one of the four (?) licenses.
Mr. Marinakis seems to be enjoying the company of journalists, since many of them are visiting his presidential VIP suite at 'Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium' in every home game of Olympiakos.
Vangelis Marinakis has no official connection with that specific media group, but he is participating in all their events during the year. Lately, the workers of 'Parapolitika' are rightfully complaining for serious problems towards their paycheck dates, speaking even about months of delay.
Mr. Marinakis' financial stability is clear. He continued the work of his late father, Miltiadis, and is the leader of one of the most important shipping companies in London. He is the president and founder of Capital Maritime & Trading Corp with the management of 40 ships, mostly tankers and cargo ships. His company Capital Product Partners is already in Nasdaq, with a stock capital of 360 million dollars. Generally, the personal fortune of Mr. Marinakis is rumored to be higher than 700 million dollars. The Brittish version of Lloyd's List «Power 100» gave him the 65th place among the most important personalities of shipping worldwide.
The 49-year-old businessman has also managed to make profit from Olympiakos, in contrary with the previous owner Sokratis Kokkalis. The constant participation of the club in Champions League's group stage helped him to do that, but he also managed, along with his associates, to be successful in buying and selling players, something unusual in the history of greek teams. The profit was much higher of the expenses of Olympiakos until this summer. However, the club will not be participating directly in Champions League's group stage from now on and that will test the administrative ability of Mr. Marinakis.
In 2014, Mr. Marinakis, with the power of his involvement in Olympiakos, was elected first as City Council of Piraues, with the party of his associate Giannis Moralis. He has financed since then many parks, playgrounds and sports halls at the area of Piraeus with his own money.
Still, there are also negative parts in his involvement in football. In August 2014, he was accused by Athens Appeal Court to be the leader of a criminal organization in greek football. After the end of interrogative procedure, we will learn the decision about the people who will be trialed and the others who will be vindicated.
Many people believe that his desire to get one of the TV licenses is because of the power a TV station's owner always has, especially if he is facing legal problems at the same time.
He denies those rumours and claims that until now he did not use any of his Media group's power, since his business activities are not related with the State.
People of the close environment of the shipping owner are claiming that this new activity will start with only the target of making profit: 'Nowadays, the investment in a TV channel, because of the new technology, is much different with the effort of creating one from the beginning like in 25 years ago and someone will need much less money. Meanwhile, he can rent the studio and the necessary equipment instead of buying them.
With his access at capable workers, Mr. Marinakis is facing the possibility of a non-high risk investment, which, combined with his financial confidence and well-known ability, prove that he can create a competitive and quality project, which can lead to making an important profit for the businessman'", was the article of "Vima" newspaper about the president of Olympiakos.
