"Could Dimitar Berbatov be on his way to the City Ground? The Championship already looks to be a difficult league this season, with Newcastle United and Aston Villa joining an already stellar list of clubs, but could one experienced striker be about to join it?
Speculation has been circulating overnight that Dimitar Berbatov is in talks with two Championship clubs, with one believed to be Rafa Benitez's side. Berbatov is currently a free agent after leaving Greek side POAK earlier in the summer after scoring four goals in 17 appearances for the Super League side last season.
The 35-year-old Bulgarian striker is known to have grown up watching the Magpies, and counts Alan Shearer as one of his idols, so it would appear he favours a move to the north east. Benitez is on the hunt for attacking options at St James' Park, and is lining up Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle, but could favour a move for the experienced frontman.
During his time at Manchester United, Berbatov netted 48 times in 108 appearances following his £30 million move from Tottenham where he scored 27 times in a two-year stay. The Bulgarian boasts an impressive record throughout his career, which has also included spells in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen and at French Ligue 1 side Monaco.
The 6ft 2 inch forward is Bulgaria's leading scorer with 48 goals, and has won seven Footballer of the Year awards in his home country, eclipsing the amount won by Hristo Stoichkov. A move to Forest however, looks somewhat unlikely.
The Reds signed Apostolos Vellios on Wednesday for around £1 million, and the Greek international joins Britt Assombalonga, Matty Fryatt, Tyler Walker, Lars Veldwijk and Dexter Blackstock in the striking ranks at the City Ground.
Berbatov would likely command a huge salary and while Forest may be out of their transfer embargo, it would be somewhat surprising for the club to be in a position to meet the Bulgarian's demands", was the article of "Nottingham Post" about the 35-year-old former international.
