"We want to make the strong Australian-Greek community in the country proud of our team. We would like to play as offensive as possible, but on the other hand I saw a lot of matches from Australia and they are quite good in offensive playing. I am fine with the 22 very good players players who are with me right here in Australia. For me it's a good situation I think, because we have already a strong team with us and hopefully we will show this on Saturday when facing them.
About the case of Apostolos Giannou, this is quite normal for me as a German. In our national team we have players who weren’t originally from Germany and they play for our national team. It is how the world is working in this moment", said the 51-year-old German.
"Manager of Australia Ange Postecoglou coached ME almost a decade ago at Greek third division outfit Panachaiki. Generally, we had really good results. We were on the top of the table when he left from the team and I really have good memories of him. He didn’t give me my debut but he gave me my first long run of games. So that gave me confidence and I started to understand how is professional football in that moment.
He was really warm with the players. He was talking to us like we were friends but when we were on the field we were the players he was the coach. This is what I remember of him eight years ago, I believe he helped me a lot to understand a lot of things in a short period of time when I was young. I believe until today he helped me a lot and that long run of games he gave me was the key to continue and be where I am now.
I have ALSO played with Apostolos Giannou in the national U-19 team of Greece. I really like him as a player, he’s strong, he’s tall he’s fast. I believe he was one of the best strikers in the Greek league and now for China. He’s also a good friend of mine, I talk with him sometimes on the phone. I believe he’s worth it being here in the national team of Australia and I hope he achieves some things with you national team like going to the World Cup in Russia", said the 27-year-old international.
