Things will be much different from the previous competitions for the 49-year-old coach of CB Murcia, especially at guards' position, after the retirement of experienced internationals Vasilis Spanoulis (Olympiakos) and Nikos Zisis (Brose Baskets Bamberg).
Panathinaikos' Nick Calathes, Fenerbahce's Kostas Sloukas (he is suffering from a footpad injury but he is expected to be ready until July) and Olympiakos' Vangelis Mantzaris will be national squad's guards at the decisive games against Italy, Croatia and Mexico, along with the 20-year-old player of Oregon Ducks Tyler Dorsey, who will make his official debut.
NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo of Milwaukee Bucks will most likely be available for Greece (otherwise the chances of success are dramatically decreased) and will be used mostly at "2"-"3" positions, but there is a huge problem in forwards' position and especially at that of power forward.
Olympiakos' Giorgos Printezis, probably the best "4" in Europe, is suffering from a serious plantar fasciitis injury and will return in action after six weeks, while Loukas Mavrokefalidis, who made a solid season with AEK and can also play as center, is also knee injured and OFF.
Experienced forward Kostas Kaimakoglou (Unics Kazan) has not been called from the officials during the season in order to help and it seems that he will also retire, while Barcelona Lassa's Stratos Perperoglou (he is suffering from a knee injury as well) is disappointed with his reduced playing time in recent EuroBasket 2015.
Small forwards of Olympiakos Kostas Papanikolaou and Ioannis Papapetrou have the ability to help as power forwards, along with all-around Giannis Antetokounmpo, while his brother, Thanasis, also has some chances of being included, especially if Vlado Jankovic (Panathinaikos) did not overcome his arm's injury.
Things are slightly better at centers' position, with captain Giannis Bourousis, after his amazing season with Laboral Kutxa, NBAer Kostas Koufos (Sacramento Kings) and probably Bilbao Basket's Giorgos Bogris ready to perform for head coach Fotis Katsikaris in the upcoming Olympic Qualifiers Tournament.
