"Bayern vs Olympiakos, the club of scandals" is the title of the mini-tribute of the German «Spiegel» about the "Reds" and Vangelis Marinakis's involvement in the case of criminal organization and the fact that the club participates regularly in this year's Champions League.
"Address criminal association, extortion, bribery and fraud: the charges for the President of Bayern Munich's tonight rival are very heavy. For the Champions League, none of this matter".
Olympiacos fans are not the most peaceful. Only the list of offenses in derby against arch-rivals Panathinaikos Athens would consist of several pages. It shoul not be a surprise that the German fans will beunder protection at Karaiskakis Stadium. The general political situation has also contributed to this.
Bayern however has never played in Piraeus before. But it should not be a surprise that the 42 times Greek champions can compete in the Champions League. Especially when there is the precedent with Fenerbahce. The Turkish team were ruled out by the tournament one day before the group stage draw because of match fixing.
On the contrary, Olympiacos received four days before the draw, a "temporary permission" to play in the Groups. The Greek Football Federation, whose president is also accused, expressed no concerns for Olympiacos participation inthe Champions League.
The allegations of the Greek State against Olympiakos president Evangelos Marinakis are: lead a criminal organization, aiding and abetting to extortion and bribery and fraud. And it's not just about Olympiakos, a total of 85 people are involved, including officials of other clubs and the Greek Football Federation and the referees.
500.000 FINE FOR NOT PLAYING WELL
However Marinakis is the most prominent defendant. The tycoon is one of the richest people in the country. In 2010 he bought the majority of Olympiakos shares and the club has since won all the championships. Recently the club has not made any spectacular transfers, the most famous is the former Argentinian international Esteban Cambiasso. However, the midfielder is already 35 years old. The multimillionaire and City Council of Piraeus has no real stars in the team. In March, he thundered the team a fine of 500,000 euros because they had played badly.
KONSTANTINEAS AND THE TOUR AT THE REFEREE LOCKER ROOM
Marinakis is burdened with many accusations since he entered the world of football, including the responsibility for an explosion at the bakery of a referee in 2012, who did not allow themselves to be bribed by his own admission. It is known that Marinakis visited the referee locker room at halftime of a cup final with Olympiakos-participation in May 2012.
IN THE MICROSCOPE OF GREEK AUTHORITIES
This time, however, there are recordings of telephone conversations, also by Marinakis, carried out by the Greek secret service. Marinakis had last June already a seven-hour hearing at the prosecutor's office to go through. After that, he was required to pay a deposit of 200,000 euros, every 15 days to report to an Athens police station and lay down all activities in football. In the club website Marinakis continues as President. Marinakis has to apologize for many things. The verdict is not taken but it is expected in the first months of 2016.
