Obradovic's name is strongly linked with success. He's perhaps the best basketball coach Europe has ever seen and the titles he has won in his tremendous career speak themselves. The former Panathinaikos coach is at Fenerbahce and sdna.gr met him after his 55th birthday and before the decisive away game on Friday against Olympiakos.
“The birthday I will never forget was when I became 25 years old. I was playing at Partizan and on this day we lost to Red Star in the Yugoslavian derby. My daughter was born this day and we all gathered at my home to celebrate it. She was my first child. Then someone knocks the door. It was my neighbour who asked me what would happen if we had won the derby as well! This was a very funny moment which we used to recall for many years. My daughter was the best birthday present I've ever received. She was born on my birthday so every year we celebrate it together. I'm very proud of her and of my son as well who was born years later in 1999,” Obradovic told sdna.gr.
Obradovic recalls many birthdays which have been combined with games and the most impressive one was the game in Belgrade against Benetton Treviso as a Partizan player. “It was the second leg for the Saporta Cup. The atmosphere was great and we were challenging to go through to the semis. The game ended in a draw but we didn't have to play an extra-time as we had already won by 13 points in the first leg. We went through and later we managed to win the trophy,” Obradovic says.
Friday's game against Olympiakos is a very important one for Fenerbahce. The Turkish club want a win in order to claim one of the first two spots which lead to the advantage in the quarter-finals. “We're gonna face the leaders of the group and this speaks itself over the difficulties of this game. We play away and Olympiakos have already beaten us in the first game. It is a tough game for us. Olympiakos are a very good team with quality. It's as an important game as the rest in the Top 16. After the defeat to Olympiakos in Instabul we have six wins on the trot in the Euroleague. But we stay grounded as we have to give everything against a big team,” Obradovic underlined.
