After 16 years as a footballer David Mendes announced the "goodbye" from active duty through his account on Instagram:
After 16 years of playing professional soccer I will now start my next carrier as a coach. I will start as assistant coach of the great club Panathinaikos. I would like to say thank you to my former clubs in the first place Sparta Rotterdam where everything started. I have played there for 13 years, 5 seasons in the first team. Ajax for the 6 months experience. Nac Breda for the fantastic time it's such a beautiful club. Az Alkmaar for the fantastic years the club where I won my first championship. Red bull Salzburg I would like to thank, they have given me a lot of experience abroad and many other things. Of course also the double that we won.
And Panathinaikos I had a fantastic time here as a player. Of course the cup that i have won. Now is Panathinaikos the club that gives me the opportunity to start my new carrier thanks a lot again.
Of course without my family and my friends I would not have achieved what I did in my life and specially in my carrier.
