The indictment includes the five accusations that Vaggelis Marinakis is facing for his alleged involvement in the criminal organisation in Greek football. Among the indictment Marinakis seems to play the major role in the criminal organisation, manipulating the Hellenic Football Federation as well as being informed over match-fixed games for legal or illegal betting.
Also shocking documents reveal his alleged involvement in the bombing of Konstantineas’s bakery and in the alleged fixed game between Olympiakos and Veroia along with Veroia chairman, Arvanitidis. Moreover the indictment refers to Olympiakos’s participation in the Champions League which is controversial claiming an illegal profit. Finally the special investigator, Giorgos Andreadis refers to the sackings of the journalists Nikolas Vasilaras and Vasilis Papatheodorou and the influence of the media along with the contacts with the UEFA executive Theodoros Theodoridis and the replacement of Pilavios at the Hellenic Football Federation.
The indictment is stating among others:
“The major role in the criminal organsation
Your role was specified in a meeting in December 2011 in Hilton hotel with Giorgos Sarris, Theodoros Kouridis, Aristidis Stathopoulos, Ioannis Papakonstantinou, Nikolaos Prountzos and Christos Savvas. But the most emphatic sign of your involvement is that Kouridis and Stathopoulos, two of the major members of this criminal organisation as well, went to Kalamata and met Mr Konstantineas, who was the referee of the game between Olympiakos and Xanthi in order to referee under pressure in favour of Olympiakos. Also this is being reinforced through the communication recorded between you, Kouridis, Sarris, Vrentzos and Ethnikos Gazorou chairman.
In these documents you have been heard to inform Kouridis and Sarris over the setting of referees in Football League play-off matches in 2011-2012 season and also over the manipulation of the Greek FA Appeal Committee for the Ethnikos Gazorou – Tyrnavos game. Moreover Vrentzos is informing the Ethnikos Gazorou chairman that his case has been won because of your involvement. It is worth saying that these communications have been made through previous mobile phones of foreign people in order to hide the details of their current holders if these records were revealed.
Your major role in this organisation was undoubtful because of the control of the Hellenic Football Federation, as well as through Olympiakos executives Ioannis Vrentzos, Savvas Theodoridis and Kostas Karapapas, you were able to control journalists in newspapers and websites.
Manipulating the Greek FA and referees
Between 2011 and 2015, working along with your colleagues in order to claim illegal profits, you damaged others’ property, forcing someone else to do so with false data, and the total fee along with whole damage raises up to more than 120,000 euros. This action of fraud, having a major role in the organisation, reveals your aim to claim a fee and your eagerness to complete this crime as fact of your personality.
Within this period (2011-2015) the promotion of referees such as Konstantinos Ioannidis, Ioannis Kabaxis, Apostolos Abarkiolis, Alexandros Dimitropoulos, Athanasios Giahos and Ilias Spathas, which were believed to be honest and objective referees, however these referees were placed because they were keen to manipulate important football games according to your wishes in terms of the final result.
Illegal profit from Champions League and betting
Among the first five teams of the table every season Olympiakos get the fewest number in terms of yellow cards and the smallest number in terms of fouls committed against them, which is very obvious from 2012 onwards. This way of constant treatment from the referees raises suspicions that among the refereeing table, there are other referees as well who have been controlled by you in order to manipulate games in favour of Olympiakos winning the title every single season and claiming the high incomes from the participation in the Champions League.
If the other members of the Hellenic Football Federation were aware of your actions along with all honest people involved in Greek football, including executives and referees, they would have reacted to replace these referees and to not approve the final tables of these seasons. Also the fans would not attend the games and would not participate in betting in order to prevent losing their money.
Finally your actions to manipulate the refereeing tables and therefore to fix the result of football matches is strongly linked with your aim to claim illegal profits from the participation of your club in the Champions League and from your involvement, along with others, in legal or illegal betting.
The bombing of Konstantineas’s bakery
Before the 23rd of February 2012, acting in a convincing way, you forced unknown people to set a bomb, which could damage a person’s life. They finally moved to this action. Specifically after failing to blackmail Petros Konstantineas, who was the referee of Olympiakos-Xanthi game on the 22 January 2012, to referee in favour of Olympiakos, otherwise he would have problems in his refereeing career, being fed up by this referee’s behaviour, you wanted to punish him and to terrorise him for the future, so you forced unknown people to set up a bomb, which could put people in danger, against this referee.
Specifically on the 23th of February 2012, at 01:00 o’clock in the morning, these unknown people set the bomb in Petros Konstantineas’s bakery which is located in Kalamata. The explosion created serious damages both to Konstantineas’s bakery but to others’ stores as well. Also cars were damaged and the explosion was so big that fragments were thrashed to a long distance, so if a person passed by the time of the explosion, he could be in serious trouble, even for his life.
The match-fixed Olympiakos-Veroia game and the collaboration with Arvanitidis
Before the 6th of January 2013 you tried to manipulate the result of a football game and you finally managed to achieve your aim. The game was involved in betting. Before the above date, when Olympiakos hosted Veroia, you agreed with Veroia chairman, Giorgos Arvanitidis, the manipulation of the final result for a 3-0 Olympiakos win. Despite the fact that Veroia were missing key players this day, Olympiakos did not give a decent display and the half-time result was 0-0.
During the second half, Veroia General manager, Giorgos Lanaris, visited his team’s dressing room in order to inform the players over the Arvanitidis’s wish to lose the game by 3-0. Finally the players agreed with that, they failed to give their best and finally Veroia lost the game by 3-0. In the 53rd and 91st minutes, in two cases, there are crosses from the left into the Veroia’s box. Veroia defenders do not intend to clear the ball and the Olympiakos strikers with easy headers score the first and the third goals respectively.
The talks with Theodoros Theodoridis over the expel of Pilavios and the Sarris’s appointment
An obvious sign of your big power inside and outside the Hellenic Football Federation, which epitomised your major role in the criminal organisation, is your dealing with well-known journalists for football and non-football related issues, such as the political developments in order to control and affect people in politics as well as high-profile executive members of UEFA, as the son of the Olympiakos vice-chairman, Theodoros Theodoridis. There is a communication recorded between you and him on the 25th of June 2012 in relation with the replacement of Hellenic Football Federation President Pilavios, four month before the elections, and it seems that you have talked with the former HFF’s President over his replacement, which you had agreed to go through asking for exchanges. Also you told Theodoridis to convince Pilavios in order to accept his replacement.
The axe of Papatheodorou and Vasilaras
Due to your contacts with the media you could transmit every information with the way you wanted to and to target whoever you did not like because he was going against your aims. So, you either managed to force him agree with you or to punish him (as you did against the journalists Nikolas Vasilaras and Vasilis Papatheodorou who were sacked by gazzetta.gr website after your intervention because of what they had written).”
